"In no case in which he (Wittgenstein) appeals to the application of criteria is there a separate stage at which one might, explicitly or implicitly, appeal to the application of standards. To have criteria, in his sense, for something's being so is to know whether, in an individual case, the criteria do or do not apply. If there is doubt about the application, the case is in some way "non-standard". Cavell (1979), The Claim of Reason, p. 13.

  2. Yan,

  4. karol,

  5. The spirits, whatever they are, of the two paragraphs to me are intimate:

W (You): My history, the essential events that actually happened and were experienced by me, constitutes the current me.

C (Cavell's Wittgenstein): To have criteria is to know how to judge in actual cases.

W: If my history was changed, the events in the history do not constitute "the current me", as the changed history is not same as my history.

C: If judgments, with the same criteria in consideration, of the same actual cases had been changed, the criteria used in the changed judgments are not the same criteria we used before.

    ------------------------
W (Possible reading): there is no sublime entity other than my history by which me is constituted.

C: There is no sublime stage by which criteria are constituted.

    ------------------------
    Interesting implication:

C: There are non-standard cases which the criteria cannot judge.

W (Possibly): There are events which I don't know if they belong to my history - the events forth my current me but before my death. My history or me is not complete yet. All we can wish is to have the desired future events which constitute me. Then, if Nietzsche's metaphysics is correct, what we can need to bother is our future lives and what our future lives are unbearably heavy as the future me will recur indefinitely.
